Naming and Structure: Organising Research Data for Your Future Self
In this seminar recording, our PhD researcher Dipendra Yadav presents practical guidelines for managing research data. Drawing on the WETSCAPES2.0 research data management work, the talk explains why disorganised files are a research risk, not just a matter of tidiness. It introduces three tests every filename should pass: it should be readable by a machine, understandable by a colleague, and sortable by default. It then covers the rules that follow, including consistent file naming, ISO 8601 dates, versioning, and the pitfalls of umlauts and spaces in filenames. The session also covers metadata standards, such as data dictionaries and coordinate formats, and a standard project folder structure that keeps raw data read-only and makes analyses reproducible. The talk closes with a practical checklist for researchers starting a new project. It is aimed at researchers from any discipline who want their data to remain usable after the project ends.
